Before you go

Worth doing

  • Call ahead or check the website - many gyms run junior sessions at set times
  • Dress in comfortable, stretchy clothes that allow big movements
  • Bring a water bottle and a small snack for afterwards
  • Most gyms hire out shoes and harnesses, so you do not need to buy anything yet

When you arrive

Expect a sign-in and a safety waiver - for under-18s a parent or guardian usually signs. Staff will explain the gym rules and where children are allowed to climb.

A good first session

  • Start on bouldering (low walls with mats) or auto-belays - simple and low-pressure
  • Let staff give the safety induction; ask about supervision rules for kids
  • Keep the first visit short - 45–60 minutes is plenty

Making it positive

  • Let your child lead - follow their curiosity rather than setting targets
  • Skip grade talk entirely; celebrate effort and trying, not tops
  • Let them rest and watch others - that is part of learning
  • Finish while they are still having fun, so they want to come back

Common first-visit worries

  • Fear of heights - start low; height comfort builds gradually
  • Falling - on bouldering, practise climbing down and stepping off onto mats
  • Busy or loud gyms - visit at quieter times if your child is sensitive to crowds
